Accusations

Brad’s anger hadn’t faded by the time Heather and Amy made it to the interrogation room, but he had stopped trying to start a fight. He was sitting at the table and kicking the leg. Ryan and Peters were acting sympathetic.

“You should have let me go after him,” Brad said. “He deserves it.”

“We’d love to hear about why you think so,” Heather said.

“Don’t you think that someone who murders your girlfriend deserves to get hit?” Brad demanded. “He deserves worse, but I don’t think I would stoop to his level and actually kill a man.”

“That’s refreshing to hear,” Amy said as she took out her tablet to take notes.

“Why do you think that Sheldon Smith killed Sam?” Detective Peters asked with his notebook out as well.

“Because he’s some sleazy politician,” Brad said. “And they think that they can get away with things like this. They think they can get away with murder.”

“Well, he hasn’t been elected yet,” Amy pointed out. “He’s just a would-be politician.”

“Is there anything in particular that makes you think that Mr. Smith is the killer?” asked Heather. “Or is it just that he is running for mayor?”

Brad sighed. “You’re right. There is more to it than that. That’s not the only reason why I think it’s him. It’s because of things that Sam said.”

“What did she say?” asked Ryan.

“At first, she was very excited to be working with Sheldon Smith. The first couple of days it was all she could talk about. She was so bored with her other job. She liked the idea of working for the mayor. She thought if she volunteered with him she might prove herself and get hired to work with him when he was the mayor,” Brad said. “She was proud to be part of the campaign. She worked late a lot. She was dedicated to the cause. But then, the other day, she didn’t seem so excited.”

“Why was that?” asked Peters.

“Well, she didn’t say exactly. But I know it had something to do with the election. I think she found out some dirty laundry about Sheldon Smith and he didn’t want her to tell anyone else. That must be why he killed her.”

“So, you think it was that she found out something about him?” asked Heather. “You don’t think this was because she was seeing Sheldon Smith romantically? Or that he was coming onto her with unwanted advances?”

Heather watched him to see what his reaction would be. His eyes widened, and he crossed his arms.

“She certainly wasn’t seeing him!” Brad said. “She was my girlfriend.”

“Someone else in the office seemed to think that they were seeing each other,” Ryan said. “But this person must be mistaken?”

Brad frowned and looked down at the table. “Well… I don’t think it’s true. I mean, Sam was honest. She was a good person. But she had been working late for this campaign all week. I wondered what was keeping her out so long. I didn’t think it was just getting donations and making “Vote for S dot Smith” buttons.
